The success of the national team in winning the Asean Football Federation Suzuki Cup last month has moved Malaysia up two places in the Fifa world ranking list from 144 to 142.
Malaysia gained 17 points in the new ranking list released by Fifa, but the position was nowhere near Malaysia’s 75th position in 1993.
Despite the much hyped Suzuki Cup success, Malaysia’s position was no better than that of countries such as Burundi (141), Tajikistan (143), India (144) and Hong Kong (146), countries that lack facilities and infrastructure compared with Malaysia.
Among Asean countries, Malaysia are fifth behind Thailand (119), Indonesia (126), Vietnam (136) and Singapore (139).
In Asia, Malaysia are 23rd of 46 countries on the list.
World and European champion Spain remain at the top of the 203 countries listed in the World Fifa rankings. Holland are second and Germany third. — Bernama
